Ronald E. Hlatky

Oakhurst - E. Ronald Hlatky, 72, of Oakhurst, passed away on Wednesday, December 5, 2018 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, in the company of family and friends.

Ron was born on December 28, 1945 to Rose and Edward Hlatky. The oldest of seven, Ron grew up in Wanamassa and graduated St. Rose High School in 1963, where he was a talented basketball player, like his brothers after him. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania in 1967, he was Kappa Sigma brother. He retained life long friends from each phase of his life.

Ron worked at ISO in New York City, then Jersey City, for years. He rode the train from Elberon Station daily and when he retired, the entire train car threw him a party.

Ron married Veronica Lindhardt Hlatky in 1970, a courtship that started after she was thankfully unable to cancel their blind date because she could not find his name in the phone book (not realizing it started with a silent H).

The family patriarch, Ron was always there for his loved ones, for holidays, emergencies, house projects, recitals and sports games. Above all, he loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. They knew him as a prolific builder of sandcastles and snow forts, an accomplished beer-bottle flautist, a body surfer and bubble-blower. When he wasn't at the playground, you could find him in his garden, wearing his round colored sunglasses, tinkering with his tomato crop.

Ron is predeceased by his mother Rose, sister Leslie (Peaches), son-in-law Oscar Gonzalez, and nephew Jason. He is survived by his beloved wife Veronica; daughter Nicolassa Gonzalez and her children Sigal, Satu, Ozzie and Kairos; son Kristofer, daughter-in-law Dallas and their daughters Pippa and Margot; brothers William, Mark and wife Sandy, and Bruce and wife Barrie; sisters Amy and Elizabeth Nowak and husband Mike; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 4-7:30 pm Monday at the Fiore Funeral Home, 236 Monmouth Road, Oakhurst and from 10 am Tuesday until the remembrance at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. For condolences, please visit www.fiorefuneralhomes.com.

How sad. I talked to Ronnie (as I rememnber him from Little league) at the reumion. We laughed about Little League rivalries. He was a Cardinal; good hitting left handed first baseman; and I was on the hated Braves. Seems like we battled in the playoffs almost every year. He mentioned my Dad who was a coach and league Pres for a year which was a nice memory. Great story about meeting his wife on the blind date she couuln't break and wonderful testimony about a really good person

I am so sorry to hear of Ron's passing.  He was truly one of the best athletes and friend that we knew during those wonderful years. I know if Ron had gone to Asbury Park H.S. and played basketball with us we would have been undefeated and State Champs. What a great friend he was and he will be missed by us all.  May he rest in peace.

Ronnie Hlatky was a kind and wonderful person. We attended Wanamassa and Ocean Township School thru 8th Grade. He was the center on the basketball team and led us to the Shore Area Championship in 8th grade. He is Number 3 in the picture taken in Oceanport after our last game, which is already posted under "8th Grade Basketball". It was great to see him again at the 55th. And, hi, to those in the picture.

Bill and Pete, it's always great to see you, too.

Sorry to hear about Ron's passing. Condolences to his family. Before the recent reunion, last time I saw him was maybe 1-2 years after High School. At the reunion, we talked about sports and how excellent a basketball player he was. Pete is right, if he had attended Asbury we would have had a champion quality basketball team.

Unfortunately, doing this is part of the aging process.

To all classmates, stay well and enjoy the Holidays.

Harry

Very sad to learn of Ron's passing, and offer great sympathy to his wife Ronnie and their family. Ron was among the finest people I've known. We were neighbors and he was my closest friend in Wanamassa. As boys we had many fun adventures, from ocean surfing to boating on mountain lakes, from board games to the boardwalk, and neighborhood sports. Clearly a natural athlete and leader as well as gifted with high intelligence and a sense of humor. Ron and I had some good laughs at the reunion last summer. Lynn and I had dinner with Ron and Ronnie at their home the following evening. More talk of fun times, family, travel, boats, other interests, lots of good things. Always my friend, I am fortunate to have known Ron and miss him.

Ron lived around the corner from me in Wanamassa.  He was a classmate through Wanamassa GS and then in OTGS.  What surprises me is how he got to be a APHS alumni.  To the best of my knowledge he went to and graduated from St.Rose high where he was a key player on the St. Rose championship basketball tram.

I'm glad to have him as a honorary APHS Grad.
